About Us

Brothers Roberto and Antonio Gentile grew up in their parents' grocery store on Chabanel Street in Montreal. In 1973, their mother Antonietta Palumbo opened the first Palumbo grocery store. She was a pioneer in the community, working tirelessly to provide an authentic Italian experience to all who walked through the doors.

Today, just over 50 years later, with more than 250 employees and five stores, the Gentile brothers continue to honor their mother's legacy. Serving diverse clientele with great respect for their eating habits and their taste for distinct international products and the freshest and highest quality fruits, veggies, meats, and cheeses, Roberto and Tony Gentile are proud to be serving the community.

Everyone is welcome at L'intermarché Palumbo. You will always find what you need. You will always be served with a smile. We look forward to serving you.

The story and the beautiful expansion
Our History

The story of the Gentile brothers started in their parent's grocery store on Chabanel Street in Montreal. Mr. Gentile and Mrs. Palumbo had brought with them from Italy the recipe for a better life; a grocery store in the Palumbo way.

1973 – Chabanel

310 Rue Chabanel O., Montréal, QC, CA, H2N1G5

It was 1973 and the parents of the Gentile brothers, who were immigrants from Italy decided to open a grocery store on Chabanel Street. More than 30,000 Italian seamstresses were working along the busy row in the fashion district of Montreal. Their grocery store quickly became a mecca for fresh produce, top-quality meat, and a massive variety of dry goods, most of which were imported from Italy. It was such a draw that the community members were regularly lined up out the door.

"They say it takes a village to raise a child, and growing up, our village was that supermarket," said the Gentile brothers. "Our parents were selling Italian products to Italian immigrants. We were the first Italian store in the area."

2007 - Duvernay

3595, boul. de la Concorde E., Laval, QC, CA, H7E2E1

Following the success of our flagship store, we wanted to expand our reach in the communities. Our first location, Chabanel, was servicing new Italian immigrants working in the needle trade. But as that community aged, we wanted to reach out to the children of that community, to enable them to continue to enjoy the same food culture and products that their parents did. The children of the new immigrants were moving out of the city, into suburban areas, so we decided to follow them.

This proved to be a great decision. The Laval, Duvernay community welcomed us with open arms, happy to have access to our international product selection.

2013 – Tétreaultville

2710, rue des Ormeaux, Montréal, QC, CA, H1L4X7

With the success of our Chabanel and Duvernay locations, we again wanted to expand our reach and introduce ourselves to other segments of the island of Montreal. Our Tetreauville location is nestled in a dense area of a once-known Italian community that has since evolved into a very multicultural community. We quickly realized that the community lacked grocery stores that offered an international variety of products and quality fresh meat and produce at affordable prices.

As with the previous stores, opening this store was a great decision. It has proven to truly serve the community's needs.

2015 - Laval des Rapides

255, boul. de la Concorde O., Laval, QC, CA, H7N5T1

With the Laval communities continuing to expand, we knew that we could service more people, as we had been doing in all our other locations. We infused our international flare and product selection into Laval des Rapides, while always ensuring that we cater to the specifics of the surrounding multicultural community.

The Laval des Rapides location has grown to be a staple of the community, always offering specialty products to meet the needs of the diverse community.

2022 - Pierrefonds

4957 Boul Saint-Jean, Pierrefonds, QC, CA, H9H2A9

Even COVID could not stop us. Our most recent spacious location is situated on the corner of Saint-Jean and Pierrefonds Boulevards, housed in what was previously a grocery store for 45 years.

"People know this as a shopping destination, and the feedback from the community around us has been amazing," say the Gentile brothers. "There is not a single day when we don't get a customer telling us how thrilled and thankful they are for opening this store in Pierrefonds. And what we really want to say is, thank you for coming!"
